I’m Dr. Desiree Cassell, a Doctor of Physical Therapy that specializes in Women’s Health aka Pelvic Floor, a wife, mom of 3, foodie and lover of all things movement and mindfulness (bonus if it’s outdoors)! I can’t tell you how excited I am that you are here checking out The Balanced Momtality Women’s Health and Wellness Podcast! During my first pregnancy I experienced all the typical issues like DRA, urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and even hemorrhoids 😳. Only to be told “welcome to #momlife” by society and other moms in my life. So, like you, I accepted it as “normal”. Then, while working for my Doctor of Physical Therapy, I got pregnant with my second (still dealing with all the same issues and more 6 yrs later) and decided to put my new found knowledge to the test. YOU GUYS I was able to not only stop my urinary incontinence and prolapse from getting worse, I STOPPED LEAKING AND FEELING SYMPTOMS ALL TOGETHER! This is when my passion for educating, empowering and supporting other women and moms was born. I just knew I had to shout it from the rooftops that all those “common” symptoms ARE NOT NORMAL! You do not have to suffer and there IS HELP! Unfortunately, I brought all these issues up to my providers during my first pregnancy, only to be brushed off and told to do kegels and exercise. With that advice, I kegeld my life away and took a Pilates class postpartum that actually turned my DRA into an umbilical hernia and caused pain with intercourse because kegels were actually the opposite of what my pelvic floor needed (more on that inside the podcast 😉). Inside this podcast you will learn all about the pelvic floor and core system, common dysfunctions within the system during pregnancy and postpartum (and in general), how to connect and be aware of your body’s limits and how to SAFELY push those limits so you can be the strong, confident, and happy balanced momma you and your family deserve! Hey Girl!
You know those moments that just make life feel so full circle? Well, that's what this episode felt like when I was interviewing my special guest for the show this week! Almost 8 yrs ago, I was just like you, searching instagram and social media for “Pelvic floor Exercises”, “Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy”, “Pregnancy Safe Exercises”,  “Prenatal Pelvic Floor” and more! Coming Fresh out of Grad school, pregnant with my second baby and now aware that Pelvic Floor PT exists and that guess what… I didn’t need to pee my pants the last 6 years?! So I was motivated to keep my leaking from getting worse during the pregnancy and starting diving more into Pelvic Floor Health. At the time, I knew the “What” and some of the “Why” leaking and other pelvic issues occurred and that they were not normal, but I had yet to learn the “How” to fix it.  
 
So after searching for reliable sources on social media (yes they exist but you have to do your research), I found the one and only Vaginal Whisperer, Dr. Sara Reardon. Wearing a Vulva costume and talking about taboo topics like poop and sex, she caught my attention immediately.  I started doing some of the exercises she talked about on her page and started to really see a difference and ultimately healed all of my incontinence! She was and is, a trailblazer for Pelvic health and Women’s Health in general as she continues to educate, empower and support women all over the world while breaking down cultural barriers. With that being said, I am so thrilled to have Dr. Sara Reardon on the show this week to dive more into her story and how she continues to elevate the standard of care for women in the US and inspire clinicians (like me) to do the same! 
 
Dr. Sara Reardon is a board-certified pelvic floor physical therapist with over 18 years of experience helping individuals prevent and overcome pelvic floor issues including, urinary leakage, painful sex, prolapse and discomfort during pregnancy, postpartum and menopause. Sara has been featured in Time, Yahoo, Harper’s Bazaar, Romper, InStyle, Today, and numerous other podcasts, publications, and professional conferences about her advocacy and educational work as a pelvic floor therapist. She is also a TED presenter on Rethinking Postpartum Care. Sara is the Founder of The V-Hive, an online, on-demand pelvic floor fitness platform for pregnancy, postpartum, menopause, painful sex and pelvic floor strengthening. Sara lives in New Orleans with her husband and two sons. FLOORED: A Complete Guide to Women’s Pelvic Floor Health at Every Age and Stage is her first book.

Hey Momma!
Is this your first baby? Or maybe it has been a while since your last pregnancy and you are trying to prepare yourself for the journey ahead. Either way, this episode is going to let you in on (many but not all) the things that can happen during pregnancy, delivery and postpartum, so that you can be more prepared than the rest of us! I polled over a hundred women to see what they wish they knew and now I’m giving you all the goodies! 
 
Books like What to Expect When You Are Expecting, can be very helpful but many times we don’t really think all those “crazy or scary” things can actually happen to us.  Or maybe you had no idea it could happen at all! Informing yourself beforehand can help you better prepare for the unexpected.. Because believe me there will be lots of that! But also help you realize you are not alone! So many moms suffer being told “its normal”, “ you are cleared”, “It will go away after baby comes out” only to find in reality, that is not always the case and we could have done something about it! Thats why in this week’s episode we are talking about all those things we wish we knew… and I am sure that there are many I have not included and will probably do a part II, but for now I hope this episode helps inform and support you throughout your prenatal, birth and postpartum journey!

Hey Friend!
 
Do you struggle with TMJ or jaw pain? Maybe tension headaches or migraines from grinding your teeth? Or have you been told you grind at night and need to wear a mouth guard? If you have any of these TMJ dysfunction symptoms or any pelvic floor dysfunction symptoms like overactive bladder, pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, urinary urgency and more, then you will want to pay attention to this week’s episode! I have mentioned many times throughout this show that the whole body is connected and I have even mentioned the connection between the TMJ and pelvic floor. However, this is a connection that is way more intimate and common than people may think.
 
So inside this episode I am diving much deeper into how the pelvic floor and TMJ or jaw joint are connected and how they influence each other.
